My Personal Struggles to Become Fluent in Spoken English

I Did Not Study In English Medium Schools

By the way, I am not an English Teacher. I am a Mechanical Engineer by profession. I was born and brought up in a small village and I did not have the privilege of studying in English medium schools or in English convent schools. My entire schooling was done in government schools in my native village. You can imagine how difficult it would be to learn and speak in English, especially, if one is born and brought up in rural India.

My father, mother, teachers, relatives, friends and everyone else around me did not know English. Quite obviously I could not communicate with them in English. In my school, the curriculum and medium of instruction both were in my mother tongue only. I could not even read English. It was all about mugging up and writing it on the answer sheets. There was no way I could open my mouth and talk in English.

Later I joined a college that too was located in a small town. The same story repeats. Here the curriculum was in English but medium of instruction was in my mother tongue. Even in my college, hardly anybody communicated in English. In a nutshell, from my 1st class to till my graduation I did not have an environment to speak in English. I know this is the situation most of you had faced. We simple had nobody who could communicate with us in English.

I Was Not Able To Speak In English During My Job Interview

The importance of speaking good English struck me when I first appeared for the job interview. As expected I struggled a lot to answer the questions in spite of knowing the answers. I knew the answer but I was not able to speak in English.  The gentleman, who interviewed me was kind enough to understand my struggles and had the patience to get answers from me with my broken English. He would patiently repeat the question if I fumble at times. But he understood what I was trying to communicate.

Eventually I got the job that is a different matter because that interview was held to test my technical skills and not to test my English proficiency. But I felt really bad that I could not answer properly even though I knew the answers. It bothered me a lot that I was not able to speak in English. Only after this incident, my quest for mastering spoken English started. I wanted to speak good English, whatever it takes.

What did I do to Improve My Spoken English skills?

I started exploring different ways which would help me to improve my spoken English skills. I tried every one of the following:

  • Attending Spoken English Classes
  • Watching English News Channels
  • Watching YouTube videos
  • Listening To Podcasts, News Readings, Interviews, etc..

 Nothing helped much!

Well all these activities had improved my pronunciation and written English skills. Yes, my pronunciation got improved I slowly became good in written English. But my spoken English was not improving at all. It had improved a little, but not to that level, where I can convey my thoughts freely in English. I could not communicate in English with ease. No, it did not happen. I was wondering, why the hell speaking in English is so tough? Why am I not able to speak in English inspite of putting this much effort? Spoken English was so elusive despite these genuine efforts.

Finally I understood, after many years of struggles, where I was going wrong. All these years I was teaching only my brain. I had not taught my tongue at all. I had spent hours together in teaching my brain but I hardly spent any time in teaching my tongue. That was the sole reason why I was not able to speak in English. At last, I felt relieved that I was able to find a solution to my problems. And the solution I found was

“Teach Your Tongue”

Your Brain Knows English… But Your Tongue Doesn’t!

Have you ever thought why you are not able to speak English even though you can read, write and understand English? Just close your eyes for a moment and think about it. You are able to read English… You are able to write English… You are able to understand English….But, You are not able to speak English. Why? Have you ever thought about it? I will tell you why it is so. It is simply because you have forgotten to teach your tongue how to speak English. That is the reason.

From the very first day you joined LKG to till today, you have been teaching your brain “The Written English”. You completely forgot to teach your tongue “The Spoken English”. Unfortunately, it is your tongue which has to speak not your brain. Your brain can not speak. It can only tell your tongue to speak. But your tongue will not speak because it has never been trained how to speak English. This is the only reason why you are able to read, write and understand English but to speak it.

You may ask why my tongue should not follow the instructions of my brain. But that is what happens when you try to speak in English. You tongue will simply not follow your brain. The hard truth is that your brain knows what to speak but your tongue doesn’t follow your brain to speak it. It will feel shy and hesitant to utter words and word combinations which are necessary to speak English fluently. Now I hope you clearly understood the problem. What is the solution then? It’s very simple.

“Teach Your Tongue”

Your written English skills will not help you to speak English

Do you know Written English is completely different from Spoken English? You may ask how can it be? Please understand one thing. As far as written English is concerned, you have all the time in the world to frame a sentence, edit the sentence, re-write the sentence, proof read the sentence and then finally deliver the sentence. But when it comes to Spoken English you do not have time to do all these. You have to frame, edit, and deliver sentences at the same time. Effectively you have to compose and deliver speech simultaneously.

If you have to compose and deliver speech in such short duration of time you should learn the moment-to-moment English Production Techniques. You should know the core structures of spoken English and master them. These core structures should be readily available at the tip of your tongue. Your tongue, lips, vocal cards and other organs of speech have to be trained for Spoken English. But they have not been trained yet.

Reading Newspapers Aloud is not the best Method

I found the solution. But how could one teach his or her tongue? I found a very simple method of reading newspapers aloud. Yes! I started reading newspapers ALOUD. I would sit inside a room, lock the door and read the newspapers aloud. Initially I found it really difficult to utter words freely. My tongue and other organs of speech were very reluctant to yield and utter the words freely. But I did not give up. I kept on reading newspapers every day. I used to spend at least 45 minutes daily to read English newspapers.

After few months, I found myself reading newspapers with some ease. My tongue and other organs of speech slowly started to yield. I was not having the difficulties of uttering words and word combination. I started reading newspapers quite comfortably. But soon I found out that newspaper reading would not give the right kind of training that is required to speak English spontaneously because newspapers have articles which are not written in everyday spoken English style. They are of written English style. I understood that newspaper reading is not the best method if your goal is to improve spoken English.

You need a special training material that gives exposure to spoken English. Yes. You need a training material that is written in spoken English style and not in written English style. I started exploring training materials and I stumbled upon spoken English producing structures and started reading them aloud. This practice brought in revolutionary change to my spoken English proficiency. At last, I found a very simple but very very effective method of improving my spoken English.

What are English producing structures?

English producing structures are nothing but the basic frame works in English language. These are words, word combinations that usually occur in English. You cannot separate these words or you cannot replace a word in the word combination with another word. These words will always appear together

For example, “I have been” is a structure in English which has to be used in present perfect tense. We call it as English producing structure. Now the words I, have and been should always appear together. You should not split them and change with some other word, say for example, you should never say or write “I has been” (or) “I am been” (or) “I was been”. These structures do not exist in English. You should always say “I have been”. Like this there are many structures in English language.

Moment-to-moment English Production

Yes! You heard it right. You can produce English literally. When I say you can produce English, you may find it little weird, and perhaps you may even think it is funny to say one can produce English. But once you know the art of moment to moment production of spoken English, you would appreciate how true it is yes. You can produce spoken English as much as you want without referring any written script, without learning anything by heart, without mugging up things. This form of English, i.e., spoken English is really easy, only if you know the core English Producing Structures.

One of the easiest and simplest ways to become fluent in spoken English is to train your tongue, lips, vocal cards and other organs of speech with the core English Producing Structures. You have to closely work with these structures and you should know them REALLY well. These structures should become part of you.

These structures should be readily available to you whenever you want to express your thoughts into words. These structures should be readily available at the tip of your tongue whenever you want to say something. You should pick the appropriate structure depending upon the context and situation and deliver it in English. If you can get to that stage, you can say that you have attained fluency in spoken English. Till that time, you have to work REALLY hard with these structures.

You should spend enough time with these structures and train your tongue, lips, vocal cards and other organs of speech well enough to speak English fluently. After so many years of struggles and finally being able to communicate in English, I would tell you only one thing.

“Teach Your Tongue!”

“Teaching your Tongue is the only way to become fluent in Spoken English!!”

Good Luck!!!
